Belize Airport Guide: What to Expect When You Land at BZE
Welcome to Belize! If you’re flying in from the U.S. or Canada, chances are your first stop will be Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport (BZE)—Belize’s only international airport. It might be small, but for many travelers (and locals like me), this place holds a big welcome.
As a licensed tour guide, I often meet guests at BZE. But my connection to the airport goes back further—my first visit was on a primary school field trip, back when seeing a big airplane up close felt like magic. Today, that feeling hasn’t gone away. I still get excited every time I bring my kids to watch the planes land, or when I’m there to greet family and guests arriving for their adventure in Belize. Some travelers are nervous, some tired, all happy to be here. And I love being the first friendly face they see.
Here’s everything you need to know to make your arrival smooth, easy, and even enjoyable.
🛬 Where Is the Belize International Airport?
BZE is located in Ladyville, about 10 miles from Belize City and roughly 25–30 minutes by car from downtown. It’s a modest airport compared to big-city terminals, but it handles all international arrivals and most major airlines flying into the country.
You’ll see it on your ticket as BZE—though some locals still refer to it by its old nickname, PGIA (Philip Goldson International Airport). Over time, BZE became the more common name due to its use in booking platforms and flight itineraries.
🛄 Arrival Process at BZE: What to Expect
There’s no train or multi-terminal shuffle here—just a small, straightforward building and warm air when you step off the plane. You’ll walk directly across the tarmac into the main arrival hall.
The Arrival Flow:
- Health Screening (if required): As of 2025, there are no COVID-19 testing or vaccine requirements, but this is subject to change based on health alerts.
- Immigration: Present your passport. You may be asked where you’re staying and for how long.
- Baggage Claim: Bags are unloaded quickly. Keep your baggage tags.
- Customs: Simple forms, occasional bag checks. Be honest and cooperative. www.customs.gov.bz
Note from Bonnie, who regularly flies into Belize from the U.S.: “It’s usually less than 45 minutes from landing to the taxi stand if your documents are ready and you’re not overpacking.”
🧳 What About the Exit Process?
When departing Belize from BZE, be prepared for:
- Security screening and immigration
- An exit fee (usually included in your ticket, but confirm with your airline)
- Bag inspection and X-ray
- sdLimited food and retail options once inside—grab a meal before going through security
Expect short delays during peak travel hours, especially around holidays. Local flights from TZA to destinations like San Pedro, Dangriga, or Placencia often run on time, but it’s always smart to check in early, especially in rainy season.
🛍️ Amenities & Services at BZE
- Free Wi-Fi: Available throughout the terminal (“PGIA Courtesy Wi-Fi”)
- ATMs: Available after Customs in the public area
- Currency: U.S. dollars accepted everywhere (Belize dollars are fixed at 2:1)
- Food & Drinks: A small snack counter in the arrivals hall; more options in the departure lounge
- Restrooms: Available in all public areas
- Tourist Info Booth: Pick up free maps and brochures from the BTB desk near the exit
Alvin’s Tip: If you’re staying connected in Belize, you can buy a SIM card across the street from the terminal at the rental car building.
🚁 Connecting to Domestic Flights
If you’re heading straight to San Pedro, Caye Caulker, Placencia, or Dangriga, you can catch a domestic flight on Tropic Air or Maya Island Air.
- Book Ahead: Flights run all day and align with international arrivals
- Where to Check-In: Right after Customs, go through the double doors to the domestic check-in counters (don’t exit the building!)
- Luggage: Domestic flights have strict weight limits. Expect to be weighed—bags and all!
Alvin’s Tip: The views from the puddle-jumper flights are spectacular. Window seat if you can!
🚌 Ground Transfers from BZE
If you’re not flying again, you’ll exit the airport and head to your next destination by road.
🚖 Taxis
- Official taxis line up outside. Ask for the price before you go.
- ~$30 USD to Belize City or water taxi terminal
🚐 Private Transfers

Alvin’s Tip: A private transfer is more than just a ride—it’s a warm Belizean welcome. We can share stories, enjoy a local meal along the way, or just talk about what you’re hoping to see and do while you’re here. It’s one of my favorite ways to help you settle into Belize. As I like to say: Walk with me. I’ll show you my Belize.

✍️ Tips for First-Time Travelers
- Belize is welcoming and simple to navigate, but don’t rush. Take it slow.
- If you’re arriving late, plan ahead—water taxis and domestic flights may stop by 6:00pm.
- U.S. dollars in small bills are accepted everywhere.
Alvin’s Tip: I may not have flown in myself (the furthest I’ve flown was to Cancun on a staff trip), but I’ve helped many guests get through their first hour in Belize. Whether you need a SIM card, shuttle, or just someone to wave hello, I’m here.
💡 Belizean Travel Insight
The view when landing at BZE is a special one—mangroves, turquoise coastlines, and the Belize River winding inland. Most of our airports are near the coast, giving you a preview of the country’s landscape from the air.
One of my favorite experiences as a child was seeing flight printouts at an internet café in Placencia. I’d notice codes like TZA or PLJ—airports I’d later fly from as an adult. Locals sometimes joke when someone arrives fast: “Yuh coh pah plane?” (“You came by plane?”).
