🚌 ADO Bus: The Direct Route to Belize City (but not always operating)
What You Should Know
- 🕰 Seasonal / Demand-Based Operation
Though some sources list two daily runs (one daytime and one overnight), those schedules are not always active. The route tends to run mostly during higher‐travel seasons. In low season (often mid-year), service may pause altogether. - 📆 Confirmed Runs at Specific Dates
You are correct in your research:
• In January 2024, there was a confirmed direct run to Belize (based on comments in TripAdvisor forums).
• In late November 2024, the service resumed again and continued for several months (confirmed via Facebook posts).
These examples show that ADO resumes the route when demand returns, but does not necessarily maintain it continuously. - 📍 Stops En Route / Flexible Disembarking
When active, the bus often stops at key towns along the way: Cancún → Playa del Carmen → Tulum → Bacalar → Chetumal → Corozal → Orange Walk → Belize City. You may also disembark earlier (e.g. in Corozal or Orange Walk) if that better suits your route. - 🎫 Booking & Ticketing Challenges
* The Belize destination often doesn’t appear in the ADO website’s drop-downs—especially for searches made from outside Mexico.
* The Spanish-only ADO mobile app sometimes shows Belize routes when the site does not.
* Most travelers end up buying tickets in person at ADO terminals in Cancún or Playa del Carmen when they arrive. - 🧭 Traveler Reality – What Many End Up Doing Instead
If the direct bus isn’t running, many travelers create a route like this:
- Take a Belizean local bus to the border.
- Walk across customs with your luggage and pay the Belize exit fee.
- On the Mexican side, hire a taxi to take you across to Chetumal, wait while going through Mexican immigration, then catch an ADO or local bus onward.
This can be an adventurous but tiring process—requiring patience, Spanish at times, and extra time (often a whole day). For many travelers, the additional hassle outweighs the cost savings.
Travel Time & Experience When Running
- Expect 8–10 hours, depending on stops and border processing.
- Overnight departures are generally preferred by travelers (so you arrive early morning).
- The bus is typically modern (air-conditioned, reclining seats, restroom) but prepare for cooler interiors during overnight travel.
- Bring snacks and small local currency or USD for incidentals along the way.
What to Do If It’s Not Running
- Use the alternative overland path: Cancún → Chetumal → border crossing → Corozal → Belize City.
- Book a private shuttle or transfer if you prefer convenience over savings.
- Fly into Belize directly if timing or comfort is a priority.
💵 Pricing & Booking
- Fare: MXN 840–1,100 (~USD 45–60)
- Where to Book:
8 ADO.com.mx – best for current schedule
8 Busbud – easier for English users
* At ADO counters in Cancún (Terminals 1–3)
* In Belize: buy through agents in Belize City, Corozal, or Orange Walk
📝 Book at least 2–3 days in advance during high season (Dec–Apr, Easter, or August holidays).
🧾 What to Expect at the Border
- You’ll stop at the Mexico border checkpoint (Subteniente López) and then enter Corozal, Belize
- You must exit the bus with your luggage and go through both immigration points
- Required: Valid passport (at least 6 months before expiration)
💸 Possible fees:
- Mexico Exit Fee: ~USD 25–30 (if not already included in your airfare)
Bring proof of your airline ticket or boarding pass to waive it - Belize Entry Fee: Rare for first-time arrivals; more common when leaving Belize by land
🎒 Pro tip: Have some small USD or Belize dollars ready for any informal charges, snacks, or restroom access.
🧳 Onboard Experience
- Modern ADO bus with AC, restroom, reclining seats, and TV screens
- Bring a sweater or jacket — the overnight bus can be very cold
- Light snacks are allowed — but expect a few hours between stops
🛣️ Other Ways to Reach Belize from Cancún (Budget + Flexible)
If the direct ADO bus is sold out or doesn’t match your timing, try this alternate route:

- Taxi to the Mexican border (~$10–20 USD)
- Walk across the border, clear Belize customs
- Take a local bus or taxi from Corozal to Belize City (~1.5 hrs)
This path is slower, but it works well if you want to explore Chetumal, Corozal, or take your time on a budget.
