Belize to Tikal (and Tikal to Belize) – With a Stop in Flores
If you’re in Belize and want to see one of the world’s greatest Maya cities, Tikal is closer than you think. The journey takes you across the western border into Guatemala, where you can base yourself in Flores or head straight into the jungle for a Tikal sunrise.
And if you’re starting in Guatemala, the trip works just as well in reverse: tour Tikal from Flores and continue onward into Belize.
Many start in Belize City or even Cancún, Mexico before making their way west into San Ignacio and across the border.
Flores: Gateway to Tikal
Flores (FRS) is a small island town on Lake Petén Itzá, famous for its cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and lake views in every direction.
We’ve written more about Flores, Guatemala as a stopover town, since many travelers use it before or after visiting Tikal.
Most international travelers connect through Guatemala City, then take a quick 50-minute domestic flight to Flores with TAG Airlines or Avianca.
💡 Why Start in Flores?
- Often cheaper flights than flying directly into Belize
- Access to Tikal sunrise and sunset tours
- Relaxing overnight stay before your temple visit
- Ideal jump-off point for crossing into Belize
Border Crossing Requirements (Both Ways)
When traveling between Belize and Guatemala, you’ll need:
